Regardless of how long you’ve looked for a job (or how many jobs you’ve looked for), it’s always important to do whatever you can to make yourself more hire-able. This is something you can do even if you don’t have a lot of experience. So if you’re ready to kick your job search into high gear, here are some tips to consider…

Start Your Own Blog

One way to make yourself hire-able in the eyes of recruiters is to start your own blog. This improves your ability to find a career in several ways. For one, your presence on the Internet will be improved, which is very important in the modern job market. Second, it helps show employers that you have knowledge in the field you’re attempting to make ground in (even if you don’t have experience). And third, it gives a ton of resources to offer prospective employers in the event that they ask for details about your background.

A blog is the perfect way to not only showcase your knowledge, but build knowledge as well. It’s the perfect transition for those trying to switch careers, or those entering the professional world for the first time. The best part is that blogs are free to own and start through websites like Blogger, so you don’t have to make an investment (other than the time you’ll spend writing a few entries).

Get a LinkedIn Page

Another great way to make yourself stand out among your competition is by signing up for a LinkedIn profile. You’ve probably heard of this great site for professionals, but if you haven’t, you’re really missing out. You can create a virtual resume quite easily, giving your potential employers a quick way to find you via search engines. But you can connect with other professionals for networking purposes and have those you’ve worked with before give you recommendations.

Hiring managers and job recruiters will consider you a much more credible candidate if you’ve got a well set up LinkedIn page. If you decided to set up a blog, you can amplify this effect by linking directly to your blog from your LinkedIn page.

Obtain a Professional Email Address

If you don’t already have a professional email address, now is the time to get yours. While sourapplebubblegum(at) might have been fine at a certain point of your life, but you need your email address to show a decent level of professionalism.

The standard route to take when choosing your professional email address is to use some variation of your name like johndoe(at), jdoe(at) or johnd(at) But if you really want to look impressive, you could register a domain under your name then sign up for an email address through your own account (ex. john(at) This way, you could post a quick resume on your site, point to your LinkedIn page and blog, and have the ultimate professional email address.

Sometimes it’s not easy to think of ways to get your foot in the door when you don’t have a great deal of experience in the field you’re pursuing. Who’s Got Your Job? Recruiters & Headhunters

It is the same with job search, sometimes you just need to “go for it”. But you can’t go for it if no one is going for you. So what to do? You need to get your name and resume out there and one of the best resources is recruiters. But not just any recruiter (and certainly not every recruiter), the recruiters that will work best for you. Match your experience with your recruiters’ strengths. Today’s post is about picking the best recruiter and providing a few recruiter resources.

  • Where To Find The Best Executive Recruiter Directory – This article, posted on and originally posted on Confessions of an Executive Restaurant Recruiter, provides some advice and great links to executive recruiters.
  • – This site is a search tool for finding a recruiter that fits your needs. The main page is a search engine where you can put in your keywords, communities (job functions) and location. Enter your criteria and the search returns up to a hundred matches (the matches are on the left hand side of the screen). The first recruiter on the list is displayed in details. Best of all, there are links at the top right hand side of the page for submitting a resume.
  • Finding Jobs: Recruiters, Staffing Firms, and Head Hunters – Another bit of advice, provides advice and explanations. The article provides definitions of the different types of recruiters (contingency, Temporary and followed by a short list of links to recruiters.
  • Adams Partners – This recruiter specializes in Construction, Architecture, Engineering and Real Estate. Their main page provides an overview of what they do. At the top of the page are links for Contact Us, About Us, Our Process and Resources. There is a link for “Send Us Your Resume” on the left hand side of the page. The resources link is an interesting page as it provides interview tips, industry groups, compensation statistics and more. There is no listing of job openings, but clicking on Send Us Your Resume links to a webform where you can fill out personal information and then upload your resume.
  • Russell Stephens LLC – This firm specializes in the Northeast (according to their site), but also appears to have contact information for the West Coast as well. They specialize in the finance and banking industry. The top of the page has links for Our Team and Search Assignments. The “Our Team” tab is interesting as you can get contact info from this page. The Search Assignments provides actual listings. Clicking any of the assignments will provide additional information on the job as well as information regarding who to contact.

Finding Hidden Green Jobs

On Monday, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said that she believes hiring in the alternative energy industry will pick up in the next 12 months. And, “Venture capitalists increased investments in alternative energy by 73 percent over the past three months compared with the first three months of the year.” In an article at CNBC, green jobs in the US are experiencing “red hot growth.” This according to a new study by Pew Charitable Trusts. The report says that “green jobs grew at a pace nearly two-and-a-half times greater than overall jobs between 1998 and 2007, though they remain a tiny part of overall jobs.”

You’ll see which states have the highest percentage of green jobs, the most explosive green-job growth, and the highest number of green businesses. I knew a guy once that would apply to about 100 jobs and get two call backs. First off, those aren’t great odds and pretty much tell me something isn’t right here. But, secondly – what was even worse was that after he received the call backs he promptly ended his job search. He would declare, I know I’ll get one of these jobs so I don’t have to look anymore. Ok, well maybe he wouldn’t march around, sword in hand, declaring these statements boldly; but that is pretty much what he was saying by abruptly stopping his job search. This wasn’t that long ago and I know you’re thinking who would do such a thing is this economy? Here are some no brainer tips for a successful job search:

1. Just because you receive a call back for an interview does not mean you can stop your job search.

2. Just because your interview went outstanding does not mean you can stop your job search.

3. Unless you have a firm offer on the table you have accepted, completed new hire paperwork, and have a start date do not stop your job search.

4. If you are unemployed, about to be laid off, or in a bad situation at your current employer; treat finding a job LIKE A JOB! A 40-hour a week job.

How can I spend 40 hours a week looking for a job? There are ways my friend! Contrary to popular belief applying online is not the only way to find a job. Behold! A list of 6 other ways to find a job.

1. Broadcast letters. After staying home for the first year after my daughter was born I needed a proactive way other then applying online to find a job. I was lucky enough to know EXACTLY what I wanted to do when I went back to work so this is what I did. I printed out on professional resume paper my resume and cover letter and sent it to every staffing agency and recruiting office within a 45 mile radius of my house. I got more call backs from this then I did applying online.

2. Door-to-door. Albeit more time consuming – dropping a professional resume off in person still speaks volumes. (Do not attempt this if you are an executive.) Professional and entry-level job seekers go wild. Even if they don’t have a “We’re Hiring” sign in the window you would be surprised how many people do not post jobs. In fact, I read an interesting statistic the other day that said 75% of jobs are not even posted! In addition to that, when I left my full time position to operate the business full time I had the Regional VP ask me how we could fill the position without posting the job or dealing with a HUGE influx of applications. It wasn’t worth the hassle to them. WOW, did that ever open my eyes to how things have changed. And it should yours too.

3. Network. You always hear it said – it’s not always what you know but who you know. That is the truth! Prime example, when I left my position my sister-in-law was actually looking to return to work after 3 years of staying at home to raise her children. She knew nothing about HR and certainly wasn’t at an HR Mgmt level but they decided to make the role more administrative vs. management and offered her the position.

4. Social networking. I never really believed how fruitful this could be until I made the change and got really involved on LinkedIn. Now I’m addicted. I love the site, I have 48 groups I’m in and I’ve connected with professionals I never would have, had I not joined. In fact, because of my profile and active participation I’ve received multiple offers to publish my content and you can now read my blog and career articles across the net! Not to mention several organizations have contacted us about having our samples in their software programs and website databases. I’m telling you – IT WORKS! Get smart and get a facebook page, twitter account, and LinkedIn account. Keep it professional and make them work for you.

5. Get your resume on the net. Not just on job boards ON THE INTERNET! I meet clients every day who are taking advantage of technology and publishing their resumes and cover letters on the internet. They have their own websites and their own professional brand. This is not only forward-thinking and visionary, it’s genius and it works!

6. Be creative! The sky is the limit, I know one person who printed up her resume on flyers and went around store parking lots putting her resume on cars. Crazy or genius? She had a job that same week.

There are many other avenues to pursue in your job hunt as well, like I said the sky is the limit. So get creative! Think of finding a job like marketing a product or service. If you wanted to sale that product or service what would you do? Now think about that in terms of what you can do to market yourself and your personal brand!
